New York Internship Program

For more than 20 years the Internship Program has been operating in New York. Students who pass the application process are placed in internship positions in some of the largest firms and agencies in their professional fields. Students from the Advertising, Public Relations, Print and Broadcast Journalism emphases who are accepted into the major and have met all the prerequisites for Comms 399R are eligible to apply.

Approximately 30 students from all the departments in the College of Fine Arts and Communications go to New York during spring term and live in the International House (privately owned) at Columbia University at considerably reduced rates. They will be placed in internships with various employers such as major public relations and advertising agencies, design studios and other communication and entertainment firms or agencies. This opportunity allows students to learn first hand what is happening in their chosen field, and to gain invaluable experience for their resume and as preparation for entering the job market. Many of the employers like to hire from their intern pool, and in the past several students have accepted full-time positions from their intern providers upon successful completion of their internship.

Students must apply for this opportunity in the fall semester before the spring term in which the plan to attend. Preparation should begin even earlier if students want to participate in this program. Not only should financial provisions be made to facilitate being able to attend, but work should be collected relating to job experience, courses and portfolio samples should be ready to submit along with the application.

Applications/information will be available in the Internship and Career Services Office in Fall 2007 for the Spring Term 2008 program.

There will be an information meeting in September 2007. Applications will be available at the meeting and in the Internship & Career Services office after that meeting.

The application deadline is in October 2007.  No applications will be accepted after the deadline.  Those accepted to the program will be notified after mid-November.

Professor Chris Cutri will be the director for the 2008 New York Internship Program.
