The following scholarships are open to communications students (or incoming freshmen/transfer students if noted) IN THE NEWS MEDIA/JOURNALISM EMPHASIS ONLY.
Please read the criteria carefully before applying. Failure to meet all criteria for a scholarship will result in disqualification of your application.

LaVieve Huish Earl Scholarship (Print/Digital Journalism)

Award: $500 scholarship
Application deadline: February 1 at 4pm, or the last business day prior if Feb. 1 falls on a weekend, in 360 BRMB

Selection criteria and requirements:
• Undergraduate student in the print/digital journalism emphasis
• One semester of scholarship eligibility
• 3.0 GPA or better
• Must demonstrate financial need (see application for further instructions)
• Students who receive this scholarship are expected to attend the School of Communications Awards Luncheon

Scripps League / N. LaVerl Christensen Scholarship (Print/Digital Journalism)

Award: Full-tuition scholarship for one or two semesters (May be split among two students)
Application deadline: February 1 at 4pm, or the last business day prior if Feb. 1 falls on a weekend, in 360 BRMB

Selection criteria and requirements:
• Print/Digital Media Journalism student, with junior or early senior standing
• 3.0 GPA or better
• Committed to completing college education
• Academic merit
• This scholarship is awarded based on talent AND financial need.
• Students who receive this scholarship are expected to attend the School of Communications Awards Luncheon

Deseret News Scholarships (Print/Digital Journalism)

Award: Two students will be selected to receive a full tuition scholarship for one semester
Application deadline: February 1 at 4pm, or the last business day prior if Feb. 1 falls on a weekend, in 360 BRMB

Selection criteria and requirements:
• Print/multimedia journalism student with 3.0 or higher GPA
• Must have at least one full semester of school remaining
• Must show evidence of quality reporting and writing that demonstrates professionalism and ethical standards
• Must submit portfolio with application (see application for portfolio instructions)
• Students who receive this scholarship are expected to attend the School of Communications Awards Luncheon and the Deseret Management Corporation Scholarship Banquet.

Peggy Hughes Scholarship (Broadcast and Print/Digital)

Award: $500 annual scholarship
Application deadline: February 1 at 4pm, or the last business day prior if Feb. 1 falls on a weekend, in 360 BRMB

Selection criteria and requirements:
• Undergraduate female print or broadcast journalism student
• At least one semester of college left
• Must demonstrate financial need (see application for further instructions).
• Students who receive this scholarship are expected to attend the School of Communications Awards Luncheon

Owen S. Rich KBYU Pioneer Fellowship (Broadcast Journalism)

Award: $1,500.00 scholarship and paid internship with KBYU (radio side)
Application deadline: February 1 at 4pm, or the last business day prior if Feb. 1 falls on a weekend, in 360 BRMB

Selection criteria and requirements:

• Must be accepted into the Communications major within the broadcast emphasis
• Must have at least one year of school remaining following the award
• Be willing to work with KBYU for at least one semester (Fall semester, 20 hours per week)
• Scholarship selection committee and broadcast internship facilitator make the final selection
• Students who receive this scholarship are expected to attend the School of Communications Awards Luncheon

KSL Scholarships (Broadcast Journalism)

Award: Two students will be selected to receive a full tuition scholarship for one semester
Application deadline: February 1 at 4pm, or the last business day prior if Feb. 1 falls on a weekend, in 360 BRMB

Selection criteria and requirements:
• Broadcast journalism student with 3.0 or higher GPA
• Must have at least one full semester of school remaining
• Must show evidence of quality reporting or producing that demonstrates professionalism and ethical standards
• Must submit performance reel or tape with application (see application for further portfolio instructions)
• Students who receive this scholarship are expected to attend the School of Communications Awards Luncheon and the Deseret Management Corporation Scholarship Banquet.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE ABOVE SCHOLARSHIPS:

  1. You may apply for multiple scholarships, but must submit a separate application for EACH one.
  2. Initial each item on the application checklist to ensure that you have met all criteria and included all required items. Failure to do so will result in disqualification of your application.
  3. Turn your application(s) and all supporting documentation in to the main office in 360 BRMB by the deadline, February 1 at 4:00 p.m., or the last business day prior if Feb. 1 falls on a weekend, or unless a different deadline is noted in a specific scholarship’s criteria, but not before Dec. 15.
  4. Portfolios and documents submitted may not be returned. Please do not submit your only copies of these items.
  5. Be thorough and concise when filling out the application. All requested information is required and must be filled in as instructed if your application is to be given consideration.
