QUALIFICATIONS OF APPLICANT
1. Education and Experience:
Must be pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in journalism, Communications, Public Relations, or other relevant field.
2. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Considerable knowledge in principles and practices of communications, marketing and social media including platforms like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, etc.
Strong written communication skills with a keen understanding of English, grammar, AP style, etc., and the ability to write and edit press releases, talking points, social media messaging and other materials.
Considerable skill in graphic design with an eye for detail and familiarity with commonly used desktop publishing tools and programs like Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.
Strong photography and video skills with some familiarity of video editing and commonly used video editing tools.
Must be able to work independently; and have the ability to work with a wide variety of people in a pleasant and engaging manner.
3. Special Qualifications:
Must be able to work at least 30 hours per week. The Internship will not exceed 5 months
Work schedule may include evening or weekend work as necessary.
Must possess a valid driver’s license.
DESCRIPTION OF JOB DUTIES
Supports the city’s proactive, strategic communications program and public awareness campaigns, highlighting City operations, activities, services and programs.
Creates content for the City’s social media platforms, including shooting and editing photos and videos and creating visual messaging. Also, creates and updates content on the City website.
Develops and designs flyers, posters, banners and brochures for various public awareness campaigns and supports City departments with their community outreach needs.
Drafts press releases and may help coordinate and respond to media inquiries and interview requests.
Coordinates and supports special events and activities, including attendance at some City Council meetings and special events and activities.
