Students from the School of Communications received multiple nominations and awards for work in fields ranging from advertising to news media
Each semester, students in the School of Communications take the knowledge and skills they have learned in the classroom and use them to create award-winning articles, campaigns and documentaries fit for the professional world.
From presenting to corporations to placing in national contests, BYU communications students consistently demonstrate their skill and aptitude. Read below about the awards received by communications students during Fall 2019.

2019 Clio Awards
BYU advertising students won five Clios, including BYU’s first gold Clio, during the 2019 Clio Awards. The students were officially awarded at the awards ceremony on Sept. 25 in New York City.
Each of the five videos submitted by BYU students were awarded — some being awarded twice. “Miguel,” a BYU-produced commercial for Reebok, won gold, bronze and shortlist.
Public Relations
PRSSA International Conference
Amelia Mecham, a current BYU Public Relations student.
Emilie Gonzalez, a current BYU Public Relations Student.
BYU’s PRSSA chapter attended the PRSSA International Conference in San Diego where they connected with other Public Relations students and professionals from all around the world. While there, Amelia Mecham was awarded with the National Golden Key Award and Emilie Gonzalez won the Diversity Multicultural Scholarship Award.
2019 Golden Spike Awards
Y Digital and BYU’s PR sequence shined at the 32nd annual PRSA Golden Spike Awards on Nov. 14th. Students won awards in three different categories and competed with many of Utah’s top agencies and in-house communications departments. Y Digital was the third-most awarded participant of the entire awards ceremony.

Y Digital and BYU’s PR sequence won Golden Spike Awards for each of the following projects:
- Tactical Research Category | Social Listening and Research Project for Marriott Hotels
- Crisis Communication Campaign Category | Utah County Fire Relief and Crisis Comms Bot
- Social Media Campaign Category | One More Reason to Love Where you Live. This was a collaborative project between LiveDaybreak and Y Digital.
Additionally, the project titled “Making the G20 Interfaith Forum Accessible to Everyone” was one of two finalists in the Institutional Program Campaign Category, losing only to the project who won Best of Show.
The Golden Spike Awards recognize quality work from PR and communication professionals throughout Utah and has become the state’s longest-running and most prestigious public relations and communications awards event.
