Alex Curry is an associate professor in the BYU School of Communication’s public relations sequence. He earned a Ph.D. in communication studies from the University of Texas at Austin, as well as a bachelor’s and master’s degree from BYU. Prior to entering academia, he worked in senior communication roles for California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Alex’s approach to teaching focuses on promoting dialogue in the classroom and giving students abundant opportunities to put what they’re learning into practice. His research explores how institutions—from sports teams to news organizations—engage with publics, foster belonging, and navigate trust. He has published in leading journals including Journalism, Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, Journal of Public Relations Research, Digital Journalism, and International Journal of Sport Communication, and he has received national recognition for his scholarship on news transparency and civic discourse.
As a two-time BYU graduate, Alex is grateful to return to a campus where the pursuit of truth includes both spiritual and scholarly growth. He is married with four children, and when he’s not in the classroom, he enjoys baseball, going on walks, and spending time with his family.
