QUALIFICATIONS OF APPLICANT

  • Must have strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be familiar with MLA or APA citation styles.  
  • Must have an eye for creating engaging and easy to understand learning materials, including but not limited to presentation slides, infographics, video tutorials, and more.
  • Should be familiar with topics addressed in either English, Humanities, Social Science, History, or Business courses. 
  • Must have taken or plan to take a college level Writing course.  
  • Must be willing to work 10-15 hours a week. 
  • Must have regular and consistent attendance at scheduled shift. The ability to come each day, Monday-Friday, is preferred.  
  • Must be able to work evenings (some days as late as 8:00 pm), but the schedule is flexible. Applicants may continue into future semesters. 

Prefered Qualifications:

  • Instructional Design, Graphic Design, English, English Teaching, Humanities, Social Science, History, History Teaching, or Business majors are preferred, but any students who are confident in their writing and visual design abilities and are interested in this position are encouraged to apply. 
  • Teaching or tutoring experience.
  • Proficiency in all aspects of writing — grammar, syntax, analysis, revision, and conventions.
  • Knowledge of general copyright and accessibility laws governing the creation of educational materials.

DESCRIPTION OF JOB DUTIES

  • This position will primarily be responsible for reviewing educational materials created by subject-specific tutors for our Learning Library before they are published online. Candidates will edit each resource to ensure that they are polished and easy to understand and that they are visually engaging and accessible.
  • In addition to reviewing these resources, candidates will conduct one-on-one tutoring sessions online and in person for one of the following subjects: English, Writing, Humanities, History, Social Science, or Business. They will also review assignments with students, answer emails, run online learning activities, and may grade student assignments depending on what subject the candidate specializes in.
  • Additionally, you will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the professional educational world.  
  • Peer Tutors / Instructional Designers work from the Harman Continuing Education Building on BYU campus and complete live interactions with students both in-person and in an online classroom. This is NOT a remote job.  
  • Peer Tutors are expected to attend regular training meetings during work hours for CRLA tutor certification. These training meetings are provided by the Student Success Center.
