Requirements for Supervisors
Requirements for Supervisors Hosting BYU students receiving academic credit
- Step 1. Off campus providers are required to have a signed internship agreement on file with BYU. You may search the database or find the pdf to sign and email back at this link https://experience.byu.edu/providers-new-site-copy
Step 2. Make sure that your students are equipped to work the necessary hours.
- Advertisement, Public Relations, and Journalism students may enroll in COMMS 496R for 3-6 credits, with the minimum being 3 credits. For each academic credit enrolled, students will need to complete 42 hours at their internship. i.e. for a 3 credit enrollment, students will need to complete 126 hours at their internship. For a 4-credit enrollment, students will need to complete 168 hours at their internship, etc.
- Media & Society students may enroll in COMMS 496R for 1-3 credits.
Step 3. BE INVOLVED!
- Goals: At the beginning of the semester they are invited to make goals for their internship, it is helpful for you to go over those goals with them so you can work together to help the student achieve their goals. Throughout the semester they will report their working hours and a short reflection on how they are doing at accomplishing their goals. Our focus as an office is to facilitate opportunities for students to connect with their supervisors to improve on their ability to communicate and contribute to work environments
Evaluations: At two points during the semester, supervisors will receive an email with the link to 1. a mid semester check-in survey and 2. an employer evaluation on Google Forms.
- Evaluations are based on student performance and the 8 NACE Career Readiness Competencies (https://experience.byu.edu/career-readiness-competencies). Your assessment is a significant part of your intern's final grade and learning experience. Prompt completion of the evaluation with student feedback is an important aspect of the students development.
