The Universe

The Universe is BYU’s student-produced online news site and campus lab newspaper, continuing a proud tradition of student journalism dating back to 1891. As part of the journalism and public relations curriculum in the School of Communications, The Universe provides daily online news and a weekly print edition during the academic year—including Spring and Summer terms. The newsroom operates as a professional lab experience where nearly 200 communications students each year are mentored by faculty and staff in reporting, editing, design, photography, advertising, and production.

Rooted in the mission of BYU and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, The Universe emphasizes hands-on training and ethical storytelling. It is consistently recognized among the top college newspapers in the country and competes successfully with professional outlets of similar size. Students and the publication have earned state, regional, and national honors for breaking news, in-depth reporting, design, and overall excellence.
