Wage/Salary: $20/hour. Individual starting salary will depend on qualifications, certifications, and experience. The City also provides a comprehensive and competitive benefits package.

QUALIFICATIONS OF APPLICANT

  • One to two (1-2) years of university-level schooling/training with current enrollment in upper level courses in Public Relations, Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Graphic Design, Advertising, Digital Marketing, or other related fields.
  • Knowledge of marketing, promotional, communications, public relations practices and principles
  • Knowledge of journalistic writing and media communications, including appropriate use of the English/Spanish language, grammar, punctuation, composition, etc.
  • Ability to use and manage social media platforms effectively
  • Ability to project a positive image of the City in the preparation of marketing and media materials
  • Ability to anticipate public relations and communications needs and to be proactive in addressing such needs
  • Ability to use discretion and independent judgment
  • Ability to appropriately use City funds, materials and equipment
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, city officials, media representatives, and the public Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to organize, analyze, and report on various topics
  • Social media marketing, content creation, and video editing skills are highly desirable
  • Immediate design skills with experience with the Adobe Suite, Canva, or other graphic design software is preferred
  • The Communications/Marketing Intern is a non-benefited Summer internship position working under the direction of the Public Information Officer. This position is designed to provide interns with experiential learning opportunities to develop professional-level skills in communications, public relations, marketing, and communications strategy in a local government setting.

DESCRIPTION OF JOB DUTIES

  • Maintain and create content for the City of Orem’s communication resources, including media and content for web pages, social media accounts, and other digital communication channels.
  • Form a collaborative working relationship with the Mayor, City Council, City Administration, City departments, and other City departments.
  • Attend meetings as assigned.
  • Assist the Public Information Officer in the development of communications and marketing resources for the City of Orem and its various departments.
  • Assist the Public Information Officer in developing communications pieces for key Mayoral and City Council programs and initiatives.
  • Apply knowledge and experience gained from coursework to recommend and implement innovative tactics to engage with and connect Orem residents to the city.
  • Produce publications, flyers, brochures, fact sheets, and other documents.
  • Design and create high quality graphics, publications, video, and other content for print and digital communication initiatives.
  • May assist in planning, promoting, and hosting City of Orem events.
  • Perform duties that may include light physical effort such as lifting, bending, and walking and prolonged sitting at a desk or computer terminal.
  • Deal with people in situations that may, at times, become confrontational, stressful or uncomfortable.
  • Manage numerous tasks and assignments at a time with frequent interruptions.
  • Work may require an exposure to stressful circumstances, including the meeting of deadlines, other stressful work conditions and contact with the public in negative situations.
  • Must be able to work 40 hours per week at various times as needed. Some nights and weekends are required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
