Alice Yuet Ling Law, a Brigham Young University public relations student, was recently named a top five finalist in the Public Relations Student of the Year Competition.The competition is annually hosted by the Salt Lake Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America and the Intrepid Agency. Each year the competition receives entries Utah and parts of Idaho, making it one of the most sought after public relations recognitions in the region for students.
“I loved the experience,” said Law. “I learned a lot and got to experience how the real world works. I realized how much I had learned in BYU’s program and that I have the ability to compete with other students.”
This year’s competition focused around developing a public relations campaign to help bolster Salt Lake City’s Homeless Outreach Service Team. Students were asked to develop a plan to improve communications efforts to educate the public regarding homelessness and associated issues.
“I thought this would be a good opportunity for me to step out of my comfort zone, but I wasn’t sure if I would do well because English isn’t my native language,” confided Law.
A native of Hong Kong, Law came to BYU as a freshman in 2012. She will graduate at the end of Spring term and is preparing to enter the corporate public relations workforce.
While talking about how BYU’s School of Communications has helped her to achieve her goals, Law said, “The public relations program has prepared me for the real world. I learned to think clearly and to work with people of different cultures.”
Law hopes that other students will learn from her example and not limit themselves because of their comfort zone. ”You will learn and grow a lot,” said Law. “If you are willing to try and do new things.”
