SCHOLARSHIPS - GENERAL

Open to all emphases (Advertising, Comms Studies, Journalism & Sports Media, Public Relations)

The following scholarships are open to communications students in any emphasis, or pre-comms/incoming freshman/transfer students interested in communications, if noted on the description.

Please read the criteria carefully before applying.

You will fill out a single online application to be considered for these scholarships. All applications require you to upload a resume and your full progress report from AIM. Individual scholarships have other requirements as described below.

Communications Development Advisory Board Scholarship (open to comms, pre-comms, transferring, or incoming students)
Award: up to full LDS tuition for 1 or 2 semesters

Application deadline: February 1

Selection criteria and requirements:

• Communications student or incoming student planning to major in Communications (pre-comms/freshman/transfer).
• 3.0 GPA or better
• Communications major or pre-major with involvement in the editorial or photographic side of a newspaper or year book production, or involved in the development of a community or public relations program – portfolio required (see application instructions for portfolios)
• Must show financial need
• Preference given to minority incoming or continuing students, second preference to non-minority students meeting the criteria, third priority given to continuing students
• Indicate ethnic background
• Students who receive this scholarship are expected to attend the School of Communications Awards Luncheon

Deseret Digital Media Scholarship (open to comms students only)
Award: Full tuition, one semester scholarship for one student

Application deadline: February 1

Selection criteria and requirements:

• Communications student with 3.0 or higher GPA
• Must have at least one full semester of school remaining
• Must show evidence of quality use of new media for communication purposes, with strong interest, ability, and application of new media in communications
• Must submit portfolio of new media products with application (see application for other requirements)
• Students who receive this scholarship are expected to attend the School of Communications Awards Luncheon and the Deseret Management Corporation Scholarship Banquet.

Stephen W. Gibson Entrepreneurial Scholarship (for third year comms students only)

Award: $1,000 scholarship

Application deadline: February 1

Selection criteria and requirements:

• Third-year Communications student
• 3.0 GPA or better
• Preparing for a career in entrepreneurial endeavors as evidenced by ownership of a business, or expressed desire to initiate a business venture (PR agency, radio station, newspaper, or other media related business) in the United States.
• Committed to completing college education
• Preference given to US citizens, permanent residents or minority students who meet the above criteria
• Attach letter describing your entrepreneurial endeavors/plans
• Students who receive this scholarship are expected to attend the School of Communications Awards Luncheon

Nancy Briggs Rooker Richards Memorial Scholarship (for comms students only)

Award: $600 scholarship

Application deadline: February 1

This scholarship is funded by a legal instrument that contains an award restriction on the basis of sex. It is pooled with other non-restrictive scholarships and is administered by the university so that the overall effect of the award is not discriminatory.

Selection criteria and requirements:

• Preference given to outstanding junior or senior Communications students who emulate the values of Nancy Briggs Rooker Richards, a BYU graduate and former faculty member who had a successful career in education and was actively involved in several community organizations.
• 3.0 GPA or better
• This scholarship is awarded based on financial need. Follow instructions on application to describe nature of financial need.
• Students who receive this scholarship are expected to attend the School of Communications Awards Luncheon.

Professor Raymond Beckham Endowed Scholarship (for comms students only)

Award: ½ tuition, 1 semester scholarship

Application deadline: February 1

Selection criteria and requirements:

• Must be a communications student
• This scholarship is awarded based on financial need. Follow instructions on application to describe nature of financial need.
• Minimum 3.0 GPA
• Students who receive this scholarship are expected to attend the School of Communications Awards Luncheon

Clifton B. and Cleone W. Wilkinson Scholarship (for comms students only)

Award: ½ tuition, 1 semester scholarship

Application deadline: February 1

Selection criteria and requirements:

• Must be a communications student
• This scholarship is awarded based on financial need. Follow instructions on application to describe nature of financial need.
• Minimum 3.0 GPA
• Students who receive this scholarship are expected to attend the School of Communications Awards Luncheon

Diana King Memorial Scholarship (for comms students only)

Award: $3,500, 1 semester

Application deadline: February 1

Selection criteria and requirements:

• Must be a communications student
• For talented artists and storytellers with a passion and talent for the cinematic, television, and media arts. Work samples required. See application for instructions.
• Demonstrated financial need. Follow instructions on application to describe nature of financial need.
• Minimum 3.0 GPA
Students who receive this scholarship are expected to attend the School of Communications Awards Luncheon

Talent Awards (for undergrad comms, pre-comms, transferring, or incoming students)

Award: up to ½ tuition

Application deadline: February 1

Selection criteria and requirements:

• Undergraduate Communications major or student tracking to enter any Communications emphasis (advertising, communications studies, journalism, public relations).
• Pre-comms, incoming freshman, or transfer student planning to major in Communications.
• Must submit portfolio, including writing samples/video tape and/or letters of recommendation (Please make a copy of any items submitted. Do not submit your only copy.) See application for portfolio instructions.
• Must demonstrate talent in chosen area of study.
