Summer is often a time of sun-filled relaxation. Not so for the new director of the School of Communications, Ed Carter, who spent four weeks this summer in damp England finishing his master’s degree in international human rights law at the University of Oxford.

New Associate Dean Selected for College of Fine Arts and Communications

Rory R. Scanlon, professor of theatre and media arts, has been appointed to serve a second term as associate dean in the College of Fine Arts and Communications. Ed Adams, dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communications, made the announcement last week and stated that Scanlon’s responsibilities will include Arts Production and Performing Arts Council.“Rory offers a unique opportunity in this college,” commented Adams. “I’ve got strength in Rory to test ideas of design so we don’t waste our time frittering away on impossible dreams—that we can make things happen and come at the issue in a way where we can actually see that something is deliverable.

New Associate Directors Announced

On Wednesday, May 13, School of Communications incoming director Ed Carter announced the appointment of Tom Robinson, professor, and Clark Callahan, associate professor, as associate directors of the School, effective June 1. Robinson will work with graduate studies and Callahan will take on the undergraduate studies responsibilities.

Former Comms Department Chair Appointed Interim Dean of College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Arkansas State University

Dr. Brad Rawlins, former chair at BYU and now dean of the College of Media and Communication at Arkansas State University, will serve as interim dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, effective July 1. In 2012 Rawlins left BYU to accept a position at Arkansas State University. Throughout his career Rawlins’ work has been published in professional and academic journals, he has presented at conferences, written a textbook, and has many other accomplishments to his name.

This fall, the BYU Department of Communications welcomes Othello Richards, Jr. as a visiting instructor to teach broadcast journalism classes.Richards brings to BYU 11 years of experience as a broadcast journalist. He has worked at ABC 4 in Salt Lake City and Washington State, at television news stations in theTri-Cities and Spokane. Richards also brings with him an infectious laugh, a positive attitude and a current knowledge of the industry. When Richards started at BYU as a freshman in 1997, he began as a mechanical engineering major. After serving a mission, he returned to those same classes.

Steve Fidel is perhaps the only person in the world who has the title of Director of the Universe. His career has brought him from wanting to be a car designer to working as a photographer for BYU’s earlier newspaper. Today, he is the head of the campus newspaper and could not love his job any more.
