The Daily Universe

The Universe is the student-produced online news site and campus lab newspaper at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. The Daily Universe has a long history of training and mentoring students in reporting and writing, and The Universe in its current iteration is the successor to a line of student-operated campus news publications dating to 1891.

The Universe is an educational lab tied to the curriculum objectives of the journalism and public relations sequence in the Department of Communications. We publish online news daily and a print edition weekly throughout the year when classes are in session, including Spring and Summer terms. We are committed to the mission of BYU and its sponsoring institution, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Our main objective is mentoring and training communications students. Approximately 200 communications students each year work for The Universe as paid student employees or as part of lab assignments tied to journalism classes. Professional staff and faculty are involved in closely mentoring student reporters, editors, designers, photographers, advertising sales staff and production staff.

The Universe is among the best college newspapers in the country. Recent awards received by the lab and individual students include:

Best All-Around Non-Daily Student Newspaper
Best Online In-Depth Reporting
1st Place Breaking News
Best News Coverage, Best Website, Best Breaking News Story, Best Feature Series, and Best Sports Page

Consistently named among top newspapers in Utah for its circulation category—not just college papers but professional newspapers of similar circulation size (annual competitions of Utah Press Association and SPJ Utah Headliners chapter).

Individual students win numerous awards each year in state, regional and national competitions.
