The BYU AdLab won 10 Regional ADDY Awards and placed first in the district National Student Advertising Competition in San Diego.

Two teams of BYU public relations students recently submitted entries for the PRSSA 2017 Bateman Case Study Competition. Both of those teams received honorable mention awards for their submissions, a recognition only received by a total of 15 teams from around the US.

News Media student Kayci Treu is not only an accomplished journalist, but also a national ballroom champion. Treu will speak at the April School of Communications Convocation this month. Following graduation, Treu and her husband Casey Treu will compete professionally as ballroom partners.

Advertising student Catharine DeLong is creative, unique, and always strives to have the “oddest idea in the room.” DeLong will speak at the April School of Communications Convocation this month. Following graduation, DeLong will move to Los Angeles where she will work on Apple’s advertising at the ad agency Media Arts Lab.

BYU’s chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) elected a new board in March for the 2017-2018 academic year. Each board member serves for a year starting at the end of winter semester and fulfills a particular leadership role. The executive board comprises of a president and nine vice presidents.

Brigham Young University public relations student Andrew Cook was elected as the 2017-2018 national president of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) during the organization’s national assembly in Seattle from March 31 – April 2, 2017.

Within the BYU School of Communications, Caitlin Carr has found her place in the Advertising program during her time at BYU. Carr recently snagged what she calls her “dream job” and is ready to help other students do the same.

From “Bad Luck Brian” to the “Pepper Spraying Cop” and the “Crying Jordan,” memes have had an enormous impact on communication within the social media realm. School of Communications Assistant Professor Dr. Scott Church, recently shared his research findings in his lecture for the Winter 2017 Raymond E. and Ida Lee Beckham Lecture in Communications Series. Entitled, “The Art of Mass Communication: The Sublime, Ineffable and Spiritual Elements of Memes,” Church’s lecture focused on the importance of memes within today’s society and specifically the role they play in proselyting within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

BYU School of Communications graduate students came out on top this year during the Arthur W. Page Case Study Competition. Jason Freeman, Melissa Seipel, and Tambi Issac tied for second place against 85 other entries from 35 different schools.

The social media industry is expanding, increasing available jobs for journalism graduates.

The BYU School of Communications will host Scott Church, assistant professor in the School of Communications, in conjunction with the Raymond E. and Ida Lee Beckham Lecture in Communications Series March 16 at 11:00 a.m. in 321 of the Maeser building.

The AAF American Advertising Awards, also known as the “ADDYs,” is the advertising industry’s largest and most anticipated creative competition, receiving more than 40,000 entries every year. The BYU AdLab was among many Utah-based agencies to submit some of their best recent work for consideration. Awards are based on a level of excellence, judged by creative directors from the country’s most innovative agencies. Kyle Curtis, President, AAF-Utah Board of Directors wrote, “If you won an AAF Award this year, congratulations. It means that your work impressed four well-respected creative professionals independently. That’s no small accomplishment.”

BYU School of Communications professor Robert Walz was featured during this year’s Honor Week. Honor Week celebrates what makes BYU different from other college campuses. BYU Student Service Association leads Honor Week by bringing together multiple entities across campus, hosting events and by asking students and faculty what honor means to them.
