Journalism Graduate Takes Home Regional Emmy by Storm
Kylee Knoles (Maddux), a Brigham Young University journalism graduate, was recently awarded a New York Regional Emmy in the Teen Category for spot news reporting.The New York Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences annually presents Emmy awards to those recognized in achieving outstanding quality in the arts, crafts and sciences of television. The award is arguably the industry’s most coveted peer-recognition symbol of distinction and highlights the caliber of students graduating from BYU’s School of Communications’ programs.

New Visiting Instructor: Othello Richards
This fall, the BYU Department of Communications welcomes Othello Richards, Jr. as a visiting instructor to teach broadcast journalism classes.Richards brings to BYU 11 years of experience as a broadcast journalist. He has worked at ABC 4 in Salt Lake City and Washington State, at television news stations in theTri-Cities and Spokane. Richards also brings with him an infectious laugh, a positive attitude and a current knowledge of the industry. When Richards started at BYU as a freshman in 1997, he began as a mechanical engineering major. After serving a mission, he returned to those same classes.

Broadcast student places second in Hearst National Championship
This past week Matt Rascon, a broadcast student from La Mesa, Calif., placed second in the Hearst National Championship, winning $4,000. The competition evaluated the participants’ writing, photography, radio, television and multimedia skills in rigorous on-the-spot assignments.

Matt Rascon, a journalism student from La Mesa, Calif., has been nominated as one of five students nationwide as a finalist for the Hearst TV Championship sponsored by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation. He was selected as a finalist out of 139 applicants for the award.
